Biography

Albert Gustaf Aristides Edelfelt (* 27 July 1854 on Kiala gård near Porvoo, Finland; † 18 August 1905 in Haikko, Finland) was a Finnish-Swedish painter and graphic artist.

Edelfelt studied painting in Antwerp and Paris, received an award in Paris in 1880 for the painting Ett barns likfärd (Corpse Ride of a Child), and was elected to the Russian Academy of Art in 1881, when the Grand Duchy of Finland belonged to the Russian Empire. In 1895 Edelfelt was elected chairman of the Finnish Artists' Association.

Edelfelt mainly painted scenes from Finnish folk life. Edelfelt also distinguished himself as an illustrator of books. Especially to Ensign Stahl by Johan Ludvig Runeberg there are numerous illustrations by Edelfelt.
