Biography

Asher Brown Durand (* August 21, 1796 in Jefferson Village, now Maplewood, New Jersey; † September 17, 1886 in Maplewood, New Jersey) was an American painter of the Hudson River School as well as draughtsman, engraver, and illustrator.

He was the brother of engraver Cyrus Durand (1787-1868) and goldsmith and engraver John Durand (1792-1820).

Asher Brown Durand was one of the founders of the National Academy of Design in New York in 1826 and held the presidency from 1845 to 1861. Durand was the first American painter to work in front of nature.
