Biography

Barthel Beham (* about 1502 in Nuremberg; † 1540 in Bologna, Italy) was a German painter and engraver. He was the younger brother of Hans Sebald Beham and seems to have learned from him at first. Albrecht Dürer's artistic influence was obvious at first, but Barthel Beham increasingly turned to the Italian High Renaissance. He became a highly sought-after engraver and portraitist.
