Biography

Carl Gustav Carus (* 3 January 1789 in Leipzig; † 28 July 1869 in Dresden; also Karl Gustav Carus) was a German doctor (gynaecologist, anatomist, pathologist), painter and natural philosopher. In his philosophy he understood the cosmos as a whole interspersed with life; his painting combined the life of the soul accessible in dreams with landscape art according to Goethe's ideal. He is regarded as one of the most versatile universal scholars of the 19th century in Germany.

In 20092010 his complete oeuvre was extensively honoured in two exhibitions accompanied by scientific publications in Dresden (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Galerie Neue Meister) and Berlin (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie).
