Giulio Clovio (* 1498 in Grižane near Crikvenica; â January 5, 1578 in Rome) was an important miniature painter.
The first name Giulio is a monk's name, which he acquired in 1528, before he had carried the first name Giorgio. His name is handed down in Italian (Giorgio Giulio Clovio) and Latin form (Georgius Iulius Clovius). He also signed as Crovatinus, Illiricus, Macedonus etc., referring to his South Slavic origin; however, no South Slavic form of his name has survived. In today's Croatian, the Croatian name Juraj Julije KloviÄ is the most common, but there are also other reconstructed South Slavic name forms (first name also Jure; surname also KloviÄ, GlaviÄiÄ, GloviÄiÄ).
