Giulio Romano

Artistic period 1501 to 1550

ca. 1499 (Roma)

1546 (Mantova)

Giulio Romano (* 1499 in Rome; † 1 November 1546 in Mantua; also Giulio Pippi; actually Giulio di Pietro Gianuzzi) was an Italian painter, architect and master builder of Mannerism.

His painting style, inspired by the late works of Raphael and Michelangelo, and his free and personal interpretation of the architectural formal language of the Renaissance made him a master of Mannerism in Italy. Through Marcantonio Raimondi's copper engravings, knowledge of his work was also spread throughout the rest of Europe.
