Biography

Lorenzo Ghiberti (* around 1378 in Pelago; † 1 December 1455 in Florence) was an Italian sculptor, goldsmith, ore founder, architect and art theoretician. His most famous works are the 'Paradise Door' at the Baptistery of the Cathedral of Florence (Dom Santa Maria del Fiore) and the Paradise Gate on the east side opposite the façade of the cathedral. Even the genius Michelangelo, who appeared a century later, made a big impression on the doors of the cathedral, saying they were "worthy of being called that" (according to Giorgio Vasari).
