Biography

Melchior Broederlam or Broederlain was a Flemish Gothic painter.

Little is known about his life. Only his stay at the court of Philip the Bold of Burgundy in Ypres, between 1381 and 1409, is known.

Broederlam's only verifiable work are two wings of an altar for the Chartreuse de Champmol in Dijon from 1394. On them one can see the motifs of the Annunciation and Visitation of Mary, the offering in the temple as well as the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt.
