Vincent Willem van Gogh (* 30 March 1853 in Groot-Zundert; 29 July 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman; he is regarded as one of the founders of modern painting. According to current knowledge, he left behind 864 paintings and over 1000 drawings, all of which were made in the last ten years of his life. Vincent van Gogh had an extensive correspondence which contained a wealth of references to his painterly oeuvre and was himself of literary rank.
His main work, which is stylistically classified as post-Impressionism, had a strong influence on subsequent artists, especially the Fauves and the Expressionists. While he was only able to sell a few paintings during his lifetime, his works have achieved record prices at auctions since the 1980s.
